Of Life's Milestones

I've been so busy preparing myself for the SAT (which was on June 6th), that I didn’t really have time to think about my 18th birthday… which I had completely forgotten about. Seriously, I almost forgot my own birthday. It was only when my parents told me that they were planning to have a party for me that it snapped back to me…

My 18th birthday is on the 18th of June.

Heck, it’s my golden birthday! But I wasn't (and am not) in the mood for partying, so I told them to put it down. “I don’t want a party,” I told them. It was surprising that my parents wanted to have a party for me because they don’t usually do things like this. The only other time they had a party for my birthday was when I was four. Haha nostalgic: they organized it at KFC, complete with the awkward Chicky mascot and all. All my friends were there, along with their present-bearing parents.

I was miserable at best.

I didn't want that damn party. And I think I made that pretty obvious by being anti-social throughout the whole thing. I vaguely remember feeling extremely uncomfortable and somewhat discomfited by the whole experience. My friends were egging me to join them in their activities (the oversized chicken was leading them in a dance ftw), but I stood pretty firm on being disengaged. Maybe I was just a shy kid with social issues.

But now, 14 years later... I realized that I'm probably still that awkward four-year-old. I still don’t like being the center of attention. I'm not nearly as shy as I used to be (trust me, you could’ve mistaken me for a mute), but somewhat the same. I still don’t want that party. So I thanked my parents but told them to retract it. Since they already asked Su Ann to organize the thing, I had to let her know. Su's the best. She was the one who organized my 14th birthday gathering, where I had cheese cake rubbed all over my face. She was also the one who organized my 17th surprise party; the one where I got carried and thrown into the pool. And I wasn’t miserable… not one bit.

Don't you just wish you had a cousin like Su-Ann? Pros and cons lah, she's one annoying cousin. Lol. I'm kidding.

Anyways, although I don't feel like having a party, I don't feel like I'm doing myself justice by letting my 18th birthday pass me by just like that. It’s a pretty big milestone: 18th, 21st, and... well after that you just count the decades right (30th, 40th, 50th)? Ah well.

I’ll think of something. Any ideas, people? Part of me wants to grab a handful of my friends and go out and get drunk, just because I can. Another part of me wants that super sleek iPod. Mmm, iPodddd.

Maybe I'd change my mind and go all out. SuAnn and MeiYean, you are hereby needed for Joy's official emancipation. *smirks*
